Missa Mare Nostrum

The Missa Mare Nostrum was commissioned by the Diocese of Marseille as part of the Mediterranean Encounters, for the mass celebrated by Pope Francis on September 23, 2023 at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome. This liturgical work takes up musical elements found in Mediterranean music. The Kyrie melody is based on the Lebanese Maronite Wa Habeebee, often sung on Good Friday. The Gloria is based on the Phrygian and Andalusian modes, widely used in Spain and throughout the Mediterranean region. The Alleluia takes up two important elements of Mediterranean music: irregular meter and ornamentation. The Sanctus refers to the notion of light that floods this entire region. Finally, the Agnus Dei is inspired by a traditional Egyptian melody: bariki ya nafsi arrabb.
I would like to warmly thank Cardinal Aveline, Father Romain Louge and Rémy Littollf for their trust and precious help in the realization of this mass.
